Every now and then in my life I come across someone who’s creative output I instinctively trust, to the point in which I can be pretty sure of being a fan of any music or art they feel like creating. Lotti Sollevi
is one of those people and I’ve been crazy happy and proud to have never felt misguided with this presumption.
From the vocal and rhythm cold-wave experiments she shared with Nini Maakestad
as 29:90, to her and Julian Murray
‘s genius Dadaist post-punk avant-pop project; Tv Dinner Education
, she has been an inspiring force on the scene for everyone.
Therefore a great deal of excitement has been built up over when we would finally get to hear recordings of her solo work under the name of Incidental Music for Invasion or i m i.
The lucky few of us have had the pleasure of enjoying glimpses of this music, via the few solo shows she’s had as i m i , but they haven’t happened for a while now and it seems she had turned her attentions towards getting some recordings down.In early spring I received two 19 minute ish sides of i m i “collages/mixes of pieces and tracks” and they utterly floored me. “WOW THIS IS AMAZINGLY BEAUTIFUL MUSIC LOTTI!” was my first response sent as a text, which I followed swiftly with “It’s perfect. Everything I’ve ever wanted music to sound like. A whole world of wonderful all wrapped up together! Shit! My jaw keeps gaping open in happy surprise” haha!
Sounds dramatic I know but I meant every word and I think you’ll hear why.
So how to describe it? This music doesn’t automatically call up an obvious list of comparisons so thats a very difficult task. It makes me think of the best music genre there is; “future music from the past” and by that I mean the BBC Radiophonic Orchestra work of Daphne Oram, Delia Derbyshire etc and also the lineage they helped create via bands like Broadcast, and especially the album they did with The Focus Group. I also feel an influence, if only with inspiration and similar working methods of Finnish musicians like Islaja, Jan Anderzen and the Fonal Records crew, and of the vital production work of the The Flying Lizards genius, David Cunningham in his solo album Grey Scale and his work with the debut of This Heat. Belgian electronic minimal wave is also worth mentioning here, especially Bene Gesserit, as well as influences from the Japanese music and arts scene.
Oh and I just realised that this tape means that she’ll be the first person to have a trio of releases on Oma333
. As well as the Tvde
10″ record she also made an amazing mix tape under the name of DJ Thi-Lot
called “*blip* soundtrack
[on]” way back. Seems so suitable that she’s been released thrice!
100 black and white “piano” tapes are available from today, with black body printing designed by i m i, as well as all the cover art design. This tape will also be the first to include a unique download code slipped in with the tapes
