Mirror Variations is the first album in the collaboration between the acoustic ambient group Trio Ramberget and pianist/composer Matti Bye. The collaboration began when Trio Ramberget invited Matti Bye to participate in the group’s collaborative album Drone Positions, sparking a strong desire to continue working together.
On Mirror Variations, the quartet explores shapes, presence, time, and reflections, taking listeners to different worlds, spaces, and places. The group aims to maintain their individual, unique expressions while also creating an entirely new sound. In addition to their usual instrumentation, they experiment with various percussion instruments such as vibraphonette, gongs, bowls, and tubular bells. The six tracks on the album are improvised, some entirely free-form, while others are based on various compositional and philosophical ideas. A follow-up cassette featuring material from the two recording sessions will also be released in winter 2024. The artwork and cover for Mirror Variations were created in collaboration with artists Henning Lindahl and Martina Hoogland Ivanow.
